  • What is an ELD?

    ELD stands for Electronic Logging Device. ELD devices are mandated by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to automatically record driving data for the purpose of managing hours of service (HOS) and record of duty status (RODS) reports.

  • Who must use an ELD?

    Most Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) drivers who are required to maintain their records of duty status (RODS) per Part 395, 49 CFR 395.8(a) must use Electronic Logging Devices. The ELD Mandate applies not only to US-based CMV drivers but also to those who reside in Canada and Mexico. The rule affects various types of drivers who operate in the United States:


    • - Commercial Trucks Drivers
    • - Commercial Bus Drivers
    • - Owner-Operators
  • What are the ELD Exemptions?

    Some drivers are not required to install and use electronic logging devices:

    Short-Haul Exemption

    CDL drivers who use 100 air-mile radius exception or non-CDL Drivers who use 150 air-mile radius exception are not required to keep RODS and may use timecards instead.

    8-Day Exemption

    Drivers who keep paper records of duty status for less than 8 days out of every 30 days

    Pre-2000 Truck/Bus Exemption

    Drivers of vehicles that are older than the model year 2000.

    Driveaway-Towaway Exemption

    Drivers who conduct drive-away-tow-away business where the product being delivered is the vehicle they drive.

How Does ELD Work?

Electronic logging devices are connected to engine control modules (ECM) via various diagnostic ports and synchronized with trucks/buses, driver apps, and the fleet manager portal.
